Garv’s Pick of the Week: Alice in Wonderland (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of May 19th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Alice in Wonderland [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Paramount’s all-star 1933 live-action version of Alice in Wonderland is pure nightmare fuel.  The studio’s stars, including Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields, Edna May Oliver, Edward Everett Horton, Jackie Oakie, and Charlie Ruggles, are virtually unrecognizable under pounds of makeup or grotesque masks, in order to resemble the book illustrations of Sir John Tenniel.  Whether you like it or not, once you start watching, you’ll find it impossible to look away.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Lonely Are the Brave [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kirk Douglas stars as a cowboy on the run from the law in the modern world.  Walter Matthau leads the manhunt.

Danger: Diabolik [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: This is one of the few Mario Bava films that I haven’t yet seen.  I absolutely love Bava, so I plan to check it out, despite the fact that I find John Phillip Law uniquely uncharismatic.

The Evil of Frankenstein [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: This is the least of the Hammer Frankenstein films starring Peter Cushing, but it is a Hammer Frankenstein film starring Peter Cushing, so that’s enough for me.

American Madness [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Walter Huston stars in a pre-code film from Frank Capra.  I haven’t seen this one, but I hear that it paved the way for the social consciousness films that Capra made later in the 30s and 40s.

Dance, Girl, Dance [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Lucille Ball joins the Criterion Collection.

The Blues Brothers [4K UHD / Universal]: The sweat should be four times easier to see in this 4K UHD upgrade of The Blues Brothers.

The Good Place: The Complete Series [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: This hilarious, humanistic, twisty TV comedy is one of the greatest network shows of recent years.
