Garv’s Pick of the Week: Confess, Fletch (Blu-ray, Paramount)

For the release week of April 4th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Confess, Fletch [Blu-ray/ Paramount]: When you see the “additional titles” below, it is hard to argue that this little mystery/comedy is the best or most important video release of the week. However, I’d like to spotlight it, as it could easily get lost in the shuffle, despite being one of the most entertaining new movies of 2022. Writer/director Greg Mottola resuscitated the Fletch franchise with this adaptation of the second book in Gregory McDonald’s mystery series. Jon Hamm makes a funny and charming Fletch. I would love to see additional sequels with Hamm in the lead.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Maltese Falcon [4K UHD/ Warner Brothers]: Warner Brothers is upgrading many of their most celebrated titles to 4K UHD for their 100th Anniversary. Not only does this release feature a 4K restoration of the film. It is also packed with extras (including three old radio adaptations of the film). This release is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Cool Hand Luke [4K UHD/ Warner Brothers]: The Christ allegories are a bit overdone, but this film is undeniably a classic. Paul Newman’s baby blues should twinkle even more brilliantly in 4K UHD.

Midnight Run [4K UHD/ Shout Select]: I remember loving this action comedy when it was released in 1988, but I don’t think I’ve seen it since. The 4K UHD release might be a good reason to revisit it.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection [4K UHD / Paramount]: The four films in the Patrick Stewart-led Next Generation franchise get upgraded to UHD in this box set. Individual releases for Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) are also available this week.

Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XII [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino continues their box set releases of noir and noir-adjacent titles. This set includes Undertow (1949), Outside the Law (1950), and Hold Back Tomorrow (1955).
