Garv’s Pick of the Week: Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of March 9th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Sam Peckinpah’s most personal film gets its third U.S. Blu-ray release (after Twilight Time’s original and encore editions). This release comes from the same 4K scan that Arrow Video used for their better-reviewed UK Blu-ray release. If you love the film, as I do, you will probably want to upgrade. Warren Oates was never better, and that’s saying a lot.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Damn Yankees [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets; and little man, little Lola wants you to buy this Blu-ray.

The Dam Busters [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: This week, Film Movement is releasing standalone Blu-rays for three of the British WWII films that were previously offered in the Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics box set. I also included a link to the box set below, because if you are interested in more than one of the films, the box set is probably the less expensive option. The first standalone is The Dam Busters (1955), in which the Royal Air Force is tasked with destroying several German dams.

Dunkirk [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: Not to be confused with Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film, the second standalone is the 1958 telling of the famous evacuation, which stars John Mills.

Ice Cold in Alex [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: John Mills returns as a soldier trekking across the North African desert to try to get to Alexandria and a cold beer. Edgar Wright recommended this one on the Pure Cinema Podcast.
