Garv’s Pick of Week: Underground (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of February 20th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Underground [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: This epic film depicts a depressing subject, but it is anything but a downer. It’s a wildly energetic, darkly funny, surrealist walk through 50 years of Yugoslavian history, told as a satiric parable about two disreputable men and the woman who comes between them. Don’t miss this fantastic film, which displays unforgettable moments of cinematic art. Read my full review here.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Farewell, My Lovely / The Big Sleep [Blu-ray / Shout Select]
: In 1975, Robert Mitchum starred as an aging Philip Marlowe in a remake of Murder, My Sweet (1944). It was popular enough that it prompted a sequel, which was a remake of The Big Sleep (1946). Strangely, while the first film was a period piece, set in 1940s Los Angeles, the sequel moved the action to 1970’s England. Neither film is as good as the original, but Philip Marlowe is one of my favorite literary characters, so this release is a “must purchase” for me.
The Covered Wagon [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: Many consider this 1923 silent to be the first epic Western, so fans of the genre will want to check out Kino Lorber’s Blu-ray release.
The Night Walker [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]
: I’m not familiar with this 1964 horror thriller, but “directed by William Castle” is good enough for me.
The Master (Complete TV Series) [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: I may be good and ugly but Lee Van Cleef is “The Bad.” Here’s his “ninja in a van” TV series from 1984.
Manhattan Murder Mystery [Blu-ray / Twilight Time] : One of Woody’s better movies from the 1990s gets a Blu-ray release from Twilight Time.
