Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Kid Brother (Criterion)
For the release week of March 12th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week:The Kid Brother [Blu-ray / Criterion]
: It has been too long since Criterion released a silent comedy on Blu-ray. This one is lesser-known to most audiences, but many silent comedy connoisseurs consider it Harold Lloyd’s best film. I’m looking forward to revisiting it.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series [DVD / Universal]
: “Hey, Rocky! Watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat.” Jay Ward’s hilarious animated series has been offered in a complete DVD box set in the past, but that collection went out of print years ago. You now have a second chance to pick up the full 18-disc set at a bargain price.
Penny Points To Paradise [DVD / Juno Films Selects]
: Peter Sellers first feature film was this cheapy, which includes his Goon Show teammates Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe. The DVD also includes the short Let’s Go Crazy, which also features Peter and Spike.
The Magic Flute [Blu-ray / Criterion]
: Criterion’s other Blu-ray this week is Ingmar Bergman’s film adaption of Mozart’s opera. The film is also available in Criterion’s previously released giant Bergman box set.
Fort Yuma Gold & Damned Hot Day of Fire [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]
: I know nothing about these Euro-Westerns that are being offered on this Mill Creek double-feature disc. However, the disc is cheap, so if you’re a fan of Italian Westerns, it is probably worth the “blind buy.”
Neighbors - Retro VHS [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]
: This cult comedy starring Belushi and Aykroyd is being released on Blu-ray inside retro VHS packaging, which isn’t a selling point for collectors with limited shelf space.
