Garv’s Pick of the Week: Beau Geste (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of April 7th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Beau Geste [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: William Wellman’s classic 1939 film gets a new 4K scan and an audio commentary by William Wellman Jr. and Beau Geste superfan Frank Thompson.  It’s a great movie, but it’s the commentary I’m really looking forward to.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Lives of a Bengal Lancer [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino Lorber Studio Classics has a couple of other war-related Gary Cooper films on hand this week.  This one involves British imperialism in India.

The General Died at Dawn [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This early Cooper film involves warlords in China.

Murder, He Says [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Fred McMurray stars in a comedy that is touted to be part Ma & Pa Kettle movie and part Old Dark House mystery.  I could go for that.

3-D Rarities Volume II [Blu-ray / Flicker Alley]: I wish I had a 3-D TV or projection set up, because this collection of extra-dimensional shorts and rarities looks like a lot of fun.

Army of Shadows [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Jean-Pierre Melville’s absorbing dramatization of the years of the French Resistance in World War II has been released on Blu-ray before, but it was out of print for a while.  This re-release is highly recommended.

Supernatural [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Carole Lombard stars in this 1933 thriller involving a seance and supernatural possession.  Not to be confused with the long-running CW show.

Angel [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Ernst Lubitsch directs Marlene Dietrich and Herbert Marshall in this forgotten film.  I had honestly never heard of it.

Little Women [Blu-ray / Sony]: Greta Gerwig’s version of the often-adapted Louisa May Alcott novel was one of the best films of 2019.
