Garv’s Pick of the Week: Carole Lombard Collection II (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of April 6th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Carole Lombard Collection II [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Few actresses were as adept with comedy as the luminous Carole Lombard. A new Kino Lorber 3-Blu-ray box set offers up three of her lesser-known romantic comedies made between her acknowledged classics Twentieth Century (1934) and My Man Godfrey (1936). Included in the set are Hands Across the Table (1935, with Fred MacMurray), Love Before Breakfast (1936, with Preston Foster), and The Princess Comes Across (1936, with Fred MacMurray again). I haven’t seen any of these films, but I’m always curious to see Miss Lombard at work.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Western Classics II [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino also has a 3-Blu-ray box set of lesser-known Westerns this week. Included are The Redhead from Wyoming (1953, with Maureen O’Hara), Pillars of the Sky (1956, with Jeff Chandler), and Gun for a Coward (1957, with Fred MacMurray).
The Delicious Little Devil [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: It’s always good to see more silent films get a high definition release. This 1919 drama stars Mae Murray and Rudolph Valentino.
Little Miss Marker [Blu-ray / Universal]: The Damon Runyon story gets its third movie adaptation. This time, it stars Walter Matthau and Julie Andrews.
Sleepless [Blu-ray / Scorpion Releasing]: This giallo is supposed to be one of the best of Dario Argento’s later films. The fact that Max von Sydow plays the lead is a major selling point.
Shadow in the Cloud [Blu-ray / Vertical Entertainment]: I’ve been wanting to see this WWII action/horror film with Chloë Grace Moretz. It sounds like a lot of fun if you are in the right frame of mind.
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar [Blu-ray / Lionsgate]: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo follow-up Bridemaids with something a bit sillier.
Thundarr the Barbarian: The Complete Series [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Demon dogs! The complete animated series is on Blu-ray!
