Garv’s Pick of the Week: Dragons Forever (4K, 88 Films)
For the release week of January 10th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Dragons Forever [4K UHD / 88 Films]: It’s a good week for martial arts releases. This one features the “three brothers,” Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao. When their talents combined, it was truly something special. Jackie is well known for his acrobatic stunt work, but Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao were just as physically talented. This release includes 4K UHD presentations of three different cuts of the movie. This will probably stand as the ultimate home video release of the title.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Magnificent Warriors [Blu-ray / 88 Films]: If you crave more Hong Kong action, the always engaging Michelle Yeoh breaks out the kung fu in this one.
The Executioner Collection [Blu-ray/ Arrow Video]: Two films starring Japanese action star Sony “The Street Fighter” Chiba are packaged together in this set from the “Criterion of Cult.”
Our Dancing Daughters [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: This 1928 silent is said to be the movie that made Joan Crawford a star… for better or worse.
Imitation of Life [Blu-ray / Criterion]: This 1934 melodrama mined Fannie Hurst’s novel 25 years before the better-known Douglas Sirk version.
Rancho Notorious [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: This 1952 Fritz Lang-directed Western stars a leggy Marlene Dietrich. Arthur Kennedy and Mel Ferrer fight it out for Dietrich’s attention and for screen time.
Warning Shot [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: David Janssen filmed this crime thriller during a seasonal break in his run as The Fugitive. Joan Collins and Keenan Wynn co-star.
The Dunwich Horror [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: American International Pictures was one of the first studios to adapt H.P. Lovecraft. This 1970 horror stars Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell.
In the Folds of the Flesh [Blu-ray/ Mondo Macabro]: I know very little about this 1970 Italian thriller. However, it’s a giallo, and it has a great title. That’s usually good enough for me.
