Garv’s Pick of the Week: Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (Scream Factory)

For the release week of August 18th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]I actually prefer the Hammer Frankenstein series over the 1930s/40s Universal Frankenstein series.  It makes more sense to follow Dr. Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) from one failed experiment to the next, rather than following an unconvincingly indestructible monster.  Unlike the Christopher Lee Dracula series, all of the Frankenstein films starring Peter Cushing are above-average Hammer horrors.  The series ended with Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974), which also turned out to be Terence Fisher’s final directorial effort.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Gamera: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Thirteen films featuring a giant turtle that shoots flames out of his butt are collected here.  This is a big day for fans of flaming turtle flatulence.

Wake Island [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]This WWII film was produced in 1942, as the war was raging.  It stars a mighty impressive collection of character actors, including Brian Donlevy, Macdonald Carey, Robert Preston, William Bendix, Albert Dekker, and Walter Abel.

The Red Ball Express [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]I haven’t seen this WWII film, but it was directed by Budd Boetticher, one of cinema’s greatest storytellers.

Backlash [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]Richard Widmark and John Sturges team up for a mid-Fifties Western.  Sounds good to me.
