Garv’s Pick of the Week: Laurel or Hardy (Flicker Alley)
For the release week of January 12th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Laurel or Hardy: Early Solo Films of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy [Blu-ray / Flicker Alley]: Laurel & Hardy are one of the most beloved movie comedy teams of all time, but they spent over a decade working in film before they officially became a team. This 2-disc Blu-ray set collects 35 newly restored silent shorts starring either Stan Laurel or Oliver Hardy, produced between 1914 and 1926, before they joined forces. The films were scanned in 2K, sourced from materials contributed by archives and collectors around the world, and new scores were commissioned from the top silent film composers working today. Check out the embedded video above for a taste of this collection. (Late Addition: I hear this release will be delayed until January 19th, but since this is such a light week, I’m not going to change this selection.)
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Freshman [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]: Screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, The In-Laws, So Fine, etc.) wrote and directed this screwball comedy about a film student (Matthew Broderick) who takes a job with local mobster (Marlon Brando). The movie is great, but I’ve heard that the video quality of this Blu-ray leaves a lot to be desired.
The Crimes of the Black Cat [Blu-ray / Cauldron Films]: With a title like that, it must be a Giallo.
