Garv’s Pick of the Week: Maria Montez and Jon Hall Collection (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of July 19th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Maria Montez and Jon Hall Collection [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Exotic locales! Forbidden passion! Dangerous intrigue! Technicolor! Dominican actress Maria Montez and Universal contract player Jon Hall co-starred in six colorful escapist adventure movies in the 1940s. Three of those films — Arabian Nights (1942), Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944), and Cobra Woman (1944) — were previously released on Blu-ray. The remaining three — White Savage (1943), Gypsy Wildcat (1944), Sudan (1945) — are packaged together, from new 2K Masters, in this set.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Adventures of Don Juan [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Warner Brothers tried to get this swashbuckler into production in 1939, and again in 1945. It wasn’t until 1948 that the film was actually made. By that point, Errol Flynn was 38 years-old. Due to his lifestyle, he looked about 50.
Devil in a Blue Dress [4K UHD / Criterion]: Director Carl Franklin adapted the first book in Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins mystery series. Denzel Washington plays Easy and Don Cheadle gets the plum role of his unpredictable friend Mouse. It’s too bad they didn’t reteam for a follow-up, as there are many series novels to choose from.
Marty [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: What do you wanna do tonight? Watch’a new 4K remaster of Marty (1955)?
Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema VIII [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino is releasing another 3-movie, film noir box set. It’s debatable whether any of the films included in the box can be consider noir. Included are Street of Chance (1942), Enter Arsène Lupin (1944), Temptation (1946).
God Told Me To [4K UHD / Blue Underground]: Larry Cohen’s thriller gets a UHD upgrade.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie [Blu-ray / Disney]: I don’t usually recommend new releases, but this film is great fun, whether or not you are familiar with the popular animated TV show.
