Garv’s Pick of the Week: Miami Blues (MVD Rewind Collection)

For the release week of July 5th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Miami Blues [Blu-ray / MVD Rewind Collection]: I haven’t seen any of my recommendations this week, but they’ve all been on my “to watch” list for awhile. I feel the most comfortable recommending this one. While I haven’t seen the film, I did greatly enjoy the book upon which it was based. The first of Charles Willeford’s “Hoke Moseley” crime novels, centered around an aging, Miami police detective, was adapted by writer/director George Armitage for this 1990 film. Fred Ward stars as the detective, Alec Baldwin is the psychotic ex-con that he’s after, and Jennifer Jason Leigh is the prostitute who complicates things.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Okja [4K UHD / Criterion]: I also haven’t seen Bong Joon-Ho’s movie about some kind of hippo-pig thing, but I’ve liked the director’s other work.

The Virgin Suicides [4K UHD / Criterion]: Sofia Coppola teamed with Kirsten Dunst for the first time with this 1999 drama.

Edge of Tomorrow [4K UHD / Warner Brothers]: I’m lukewarm on Tom Cruise, but I’ve heard that this sci-fi actioner is a lot of fun. The movie is also known as Live. Die. Repeat.
