Garv’s Pick of the Week: Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (4K UHD, Universal)
For the release week of September 13th:
Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life [4K UHD / Universal]: Several titles get a 4K UHD upgrade this week, including the final film as a team from the members of Monty Python. While this film isn’t as consistently funny as Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Monty Python’s Life of Brian, its funnier than 90% of the comedies made in the 1980s. I always felt that The Meaning of Life was a nice capper on the filmography of the troupe, as it was very much like a feature version of an episode of their television show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin star, of course.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Real Genius [4K UHD / Sony]: Also getting a 4K UHD upgrade is this 1985 comedy. I need to re-watch this one, as I was underwhelmed the first time I saw it.
The Fog [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: John Carpenter’s 1980 horror will still look hazy in 4K UHD.
Platoon [4K UHD / Shout Select]: Like all of Oliver Stone’s films, Platoon is overrated. Still, if you like it, this will be the release to get.
Cool World [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: Kim Basinger, Gabriel Byrne, and Brad Pitt star in Ralph Bakshi’s 1992 melding of live action and animation. Who Framed Roger Rabbit it ain’t.
Abe Lincoln in Illinois [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: You can think of this 1940 biopic as a prequel to Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (2012).
The Extreme Adventures of Super Dave [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: I know this film isn’t supposed to be very good, but Bob Einstein makes me laugh.
