Garv’s Pick of the Week: My Favorite Blonde (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of March 2nd:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: My Favorite Blonde [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This week, Kino Lorber Studio Classics will continue their fantastic string of Blu-ray releases of classic Bob Hope comedies with three of the comedian’s early starring vehicles. They’re all great discs, but My Favorite Blonde is the best of the bunch. It’s a comedic take on the Hitchcockian “wrong man” plot, co-starring Madeleine Carroll (of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps). Almost all fans of “Old Ski Nose” rank this in the top-tier of Bob Hope’s filmography. It’s in my personal “Hope Top 3,” with The Cat and the Canary and Road to Utopia. You can find my full review of My Favorite Blonde here.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Nothing But the Truth [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This is one of the most unique movies in the Bob Hope filmography, and it may even appeal to audiences that normally find Bob Hope’s onscreen persona grating. It is much more of a standard romantic comedy farce than a Bob Hope vehicle, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s fun to see the comedian treading less familiar ground. You can find my full review of Nothing But the Truth here.
Caught in the Draft [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: While My Favorite Blonde and Nothing But the Truth are exceptional Bob Hope comedies, Caught in the Draft suffers in comparison by merely being very, very funny. Still, that’s not nothing. A viewer can’t ask much more of a comedy than it be funny, and Caught in the Draft more than passes that test. Plus, the disc features a very entertaining audio commentary by Michael Schlesinger and Stan Taffel. You can find my full review of Caught in the Draft here.
Hell’s Hinges [Blu-ray / Orlando Eastwood Films]: William S. Hart stars in this 1916 silent Western. This Blu-ray is basically a public domain release, and it is the first Blu-ray from Orlando Eastwood Films, so there is no track record to go by. Still, it’s great to see more of Hart’s films getting an HD release, so I’m really hoping this Blu-ray will provide a good presentation. Currently, this disc is not available through Amazon, so you may have to do a bit of digging on the Web to find it.
Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-4 [Blu-ray / Warner Brothers]: The first four seasons of one of the funniest animated shows on television are being packaged together for this release. Keep in mind, this isn’t a “complete series” set, as I believe the show has been renewed for six more seasons.
