Garv’s Pick of the Week: Robin and Marian (Sony)

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Robin and Marian (Sony)

For the release week of November 20th:

With the Christmas season upon us, studios and smaller labels are releasing their big box sets and major titles to grab their piece of the retail dollar.  While there are no shortage of big releases this week, I decided to focus my top pick on a small release that might slip below the radar.

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Robin and Marian [Blu-ray / Sony]: Robin Hood (Sean Connery) returns to Nottingham after the Crusades to find Marian (Audrey Hepburn) and an old enemy (Robert Shaw) in Richard Lester’s sad and lovely tale of aging, regret, and unfinished business.  While I love the earlier film versions of Robin Hood with Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn, this is my favorite film featuring the character.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Last Seduction [Blu-ray / Scorpion Releasing]: Linda Fiorentino absolutely rules in this dark comedy neo-noir as the ultimate femme fatale.

Some Like It Hot [Blu-ray / Criterion]: The American Film Institute named this the funniest film ever made.  That may be overstating it a bit, but there’s no disputing it’s a classic of the first rank.

Ingmar Bergman's Cinema [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Now we get into the box sets, and this one’s a biggie.  Thirty-nine films by the legendary Swedish director are assembled in this Blu-ray collection.

Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Women have been sitting in the director’s seat from the silent era forward, and this 6-Blu-ray set collects some of their earliest films, dating from 1911 to 1929.

Clouzot: Early Works [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Six early sound features from 1931-1933, either written or directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diaboliques, Wages of Fear), are collected in this Blu-ray set.

The Outer Limits: Season Two [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: The second season of the best anthology series not named The Twilight Zone gets a Blu-ray release.

Candyman [Collector's Edition] [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Don’t say his name five times.
