Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection 4K (Universal)
For the release week of September 8th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection 4K [UHD / Universal]: Four classic films from the master of suspense, Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds, get a 4K UHD upgrade. Most importantly, a few minutes of footage that have been removed from Psycho since its original theatrical release have been reinserted for this release.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Psycho 60th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray / Universal]: If you just want to get the uncensored version of Psycho and you don’t have a 4K UHD player, this new Blu-ray release has the uncut version.
The Grey Fox [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: In this Canadian Western, Richard Farnsworth stars as Bill Miner, “The Gentleman Bandit.” In 1901, Miner is released from prison, after a long sentence for the crime of robbing stagecoaches. Since there are no stagecoaches around anymore, he decides to switch to trains.
Kentucky Kernels [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: In what is one of the most surprising Blu-ray releases of the year, this Wheeler & Woolsey comedy, co-starring Our Gang‘s Spanky McFarland, gets a 4K restoration from the original nitrate negative. The image quality is absolutely pristine. You can find my full review HERE.
Brute Force [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Two films noir from director Jules Dassin get the Criterion treatment this week. This one stars Burt Lancaster.
The Naked City [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Location footage of New York City is the star of this one.
Cary Grant Collection [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Three forgotten, early Cary Grant films, Ladies Should Listen (1934), Wedding Present (1936), and Big Brown Eyes (1936), are gathered in this 3-disc Blu-ray set.
Dr Who and the Daleks [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: In the same way that Hammer Studios made theatrical remakes of the television Quatermass serials, Amicus Films made two theatrical Dr. Who films with Peter Cushing standing in for William Hartnell. Both are being released on Blu-ray this week. This is the first.
Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: And this is the second.
