Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection Vol 2 (4K UHD, Universal)
For the release week of May 10th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection Vol 2 [4K UHD / Universal]: Five more classics from the master of suspense — Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), The Trouble with Harry (1955), Marnie (1965), and Family Plot (1976) — are getting a 4K UHD upgrade this week. All the films are accompanied by archival extras, such as storyboards and featurettes. Shadow of a Doubt was Hitchcock’s personal favorite from his filmography, and I’m also a big fan of the dark comedy The Trouble With Harry. However, all of the films are worth watching, and these will probably be the best home video presentations they will ever receive.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Mr. Klein [Blu-ray / Criterion]: This French thriller, set in Nazi occupied France, stars Alain Delon and Jeanne Moreau. Joseph Losey directs. I haven’t seen this one, but it is probably the second-best release of the week.
Treasure of the Four Crowns 3D [3D Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Italian director by Ferdinando Baldi and action star Tony Anthony, the team that brought you Comin’ At Ya! (1981), are back with this bonkers Indiana Jones ripoff. I saw this during it’s original theatrical release, and I remember that the story was stupid and the 3-D was often misaligned. Still, it was memorable. The team from the 3-D Film Archive did the restoration, so the 3-D is likely better than it was in the original theatrical release. Both BD3D polarized and Anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D versions are included, so you don’t have to have a 3-D TV in order to watch the film. One pair of red/cyan glasses is included in the package.
The Carey Treatment [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: This lesser-remembered Blake Edwards drama stars James Coburn as a doctor who is forced to play amateur detective.
The Killer Elite [Blu-ray / Ronin Flix]: This 1975 action film is one of the sillier movies in Sam Peckinpah’s filmography, but it’s never not entertaining. James Caan and Robert Duvall star in the story, which includes black ops spies and really loud ninjas.
