Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Beatles: Get Back (Disney)

For the release week of July 12th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Beatles: Get Back [Blu-ray / Disney]: Peter Jackson’s 8-hour assemblage of the rough footage of the Let It Be sessions is a Beatles fan’s dream. My only complaint is I’m not a fan of the digital scrubbing they did on the image to take out the 16mm film grain. It removes much of the sharpness, and gives the band a waxy look at times. However, it’s largely a matter of preference. I’d personally prefer a sharper image with the original grain. The three-part documentary is presented on three Blu-ray discs, and it is highly recommended.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Frisco Kid [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: An outlaw (Harrison Ford) helps a Polish Rabbi (Gene Wilder) navigate the old West in this likeable Western comedy. Robert Aldrich directed.

Rough Cut [Blu-ray / Paramount Presents]: Director Don Siegel and Burt Reynolds team up for this 1980 heist comedy. Lesley-Anne Down and David Niven co-star. I haven’t seen this one, but the reviews seem to be “mixed positive.” I’m intrigued that it has a screenplay from Larry Gelbert (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Wrong Box, Tootsie).

Leap of Faith [Blu-ray / Paramount]: As a fake faith healer, Steve Martin takes on a semi-serious role, which still allow for a great deal of flamboyance. Debra Winger co-stars.

Summertime [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Director David Lean and star Katharine Hepburn teamed up for this Italian-set romantic drama. Reportedly, it was Lean’s favorite of his films.
