Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Belles of St. Trinian’s (Film Movement)
For the release week of February 23rd:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Belles of St. Trinian’s [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: Alastair “Scrooge” Sim plays the dual roles of Headmistress Millicent Fritton and her brother in this popular British cult comedy set in a girl’s school. The film was inspired by the cartoons of Ronald Searle, and the film spawned a handful of sequels. The Belles of St. Trinian’s was previously offered as part of the Blu-ray box set Alastair Sim’s School for Laughter, along with the films School for Scoundrels, Laughter in Paradise, and Hue and Cry. I linked both the standalone release and the box set below.
Additional Titles of Interest —
My Dream is Yours [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The Warner Archive releases a trio of musicals this week. This one stars Doris Day as a single mother turned radio star.
On Moonlight Bay [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Doris Day is back again for this nostalgic musical set in the 1910s.
Show Boat [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The 1951 color remake of the popular stage musical gets a Blu-ray release. It isn’t nearly as good as the 1936 black & white version, which was released previously by Criterion (also linked below).
Forgotten Gialli Vol. 3 [Blu-ray / Vinegar Syndrome]: This series of Blu-ray box sets, featuring lesser-known giallo titles continues. The Euro-thrillers in this set are Autopsy (1975), Murder Mansion (1972), and Crazy Desires of a Murderer (1977). This one isn’t available on Amazon (at least as yet), so you may have to do a bit of Web browsing to find a copy.
