Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Brides of Dracula (Scream Factory)
For the release week of November 10th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Brides of Dracula [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: This sequel to Horror of Dracula is arguably the best Hammer “Dracula” movie, despite the fact that Christopher Lee is nowhere to be seen. As a trade off, we get extra time with Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. I’ll take that trade any day. This Scream Factory Collector’s Edition is sourced from a new 2K scan, and reviews of the video quality have been glowing.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Stooge [Blu-ray / Paramount]: Jerry Lewis always named this as the favorite of the Martin & Lewis movies. Personally, I’d rank it towards the bottom of the list, as it tells that story of a musical comedy act similar to Martin & Lewis, but it depicts Dean as a egotistical hack and depicts Jerry as the genius of the act (largely opposite of the real M&L story). The film features too much melodrama and not enough comedy. Still, I’m happy that any M&L film is getting a Blu-ray release.
Death Laid an Egg [Blu-ray / Cult Epics]: This weirdo giallo has received multiple Blu-ray releases, but this package, which includes both the 91- and 104-minute versions, should be the definitive release.
A Rainy Day in New York [Blu-ray / MPI]: Woody Allen’s 2019 film did not get a theatrical release in the U.S., but it did well in Europe. Now you finally have a chance to see it.
The Beguiled [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: The weirdest, and arguably best, of the Clint Eastwood/Don Siegel collaborations gets a new special edition release.
How to Make a Monster [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: The final film in AIP’s I Was a Teenage… series.
War of the Colossal Beast [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: The sequel to The Amazing Colossal Man receives its Blu-ray debut, so line up, Colossal Man fans.
