Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Indian Tomb (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of April 5th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Indian Tomb [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This four-hour silent epic (really two films back-to-back) was co-written by legendary auteur Fritz Lang. The 1921 German silent, directed by Joe May, stars Conrad Veidt. In 1959, Fritz Lang would remake the story as The Tiger of Eschnapur and its sequel The Indian Tomb. The later versions have been releaesed by the Cohen Film Collection as Fritz Lang’s Indian Epic, so it will be nice to be able to compare both versions of the story.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Little Rascals: The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 5 [Blu-ray / ClassicFlix]: ClassicFlix has undertaken an ambitious multi-volume project to scan and restore all of the sound-era Our Gang comedies produced at Hal Roach Studios between 1929 to 1938. I previously reviewed the first four volumes in this chronological series, each of which contained 11-12 talkies, covering 1929 to mid-1935 (Review links: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4). The newest volume features the next 12 Our Gang sound shorts from Anniversary Trouble (1935) to Arbor Day (1936), with each short newly scanned and restored from the original Hal Roach 35mm film elements. The image quality is much improved over DVD releases and television screenings, and some shorts that have been censored for years are presented in their complete, original form. You can read my full review HERE.
Jigsaw [Blu-ray / Cohen Film Collection]: Hammer’s Val Guest directs this British noir.
Soapdish [Blu-ray / Paramount]: I haven’t seen this popular 1991 comedy, but it was co-written by Andrew Bergman, so I’m sure its worth checking out.
Doctor Who: Tom Baker Complete Season Six [Blu-ray / BBC]: The BBC continues its excellent series of HD upgrades of classic-era Doctor Who seasons.
Ken Burns: Benjamin Franklin [Blu-ray / PBS]: PBS’s favorite long-form documentarian tackles the funniest of the founding fathers. This one runs a relatively short 4 hours.
