Garv’s Pick of the Week: The War of the Worlds (Criterion)
For the release week of July 7th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The War of the Worlds [Blu-ray / Criterion]: One of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the 1950s (adapted from the H.G. Wells novel by writer Barré Lyndon, director Byron Haskin, and producer George Pal) gets the Criterion treatment, with a stunning, colorful, new 4K master and a large package of special features. Among the extras is the historic Mercury Theater of the Air radio drama adapted, directed, and narrated by Orson Welles.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Day the Earth Caught Fire [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: It’s a good week for lovers of smart science fiction flicks, as this 1961 British classic from director Val Guest also gets a Blu-ray upgrade.
The Flesh and the Fiends [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Peter Cushing is Dr. Knox in this British horror film, based on the real Burke and Hare killings.
The Sin of Nora Moran [Blu-ray / The Film Detective]: This pre-code melodrama is not nearly as salacious as you might imagine from the famous movie poster illustrated by pinup artist Alberto Vargas. (Amazon links are not yet available for this title.)
