Garv’s Pick of the Week: Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics (Film Movement)
For the release week of March 31st:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: Long before Christopher Nolan made Dunkirk and Sam Mendes made 1917, the British film industry celebrated their nation’s efforts during World War II with numerous features. Five of the best are gathered together in this five-Blu-ray box set. They include Went the Day Well? (1942), The Colditz Story (1955), The Dam Busters (1955), Dunkirk (1958), and Ice Cold in Alex (1958).
Additional Titles of Interest —
Show Boat [Blu-ray / Criterion]: James Whale didn’t just direct classic horror films (though he made some of the best). He also directed the 1936 movie adaptation of this popular musical by Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern, which features several members of the original Broadway cast.
Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Ernst Lubitsch goes screwball with this delightful comedy about a multiple divorcee (Gary Cooper) and the woman (Claudette Colbert) who is more than his match. This disc is one of my favorite releases so far this year. Here’s my full review.
The Flame of New Orleans [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Director Rene Clair helms this farcical romantic comedy starring Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot, and Roland Young. A full review will follow in the next week or two.
Munster, Go Home! [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: The Munsters TV series got a color feature film in 1966, where the original cast (with the exception of a new Marilyn) go to England. The Scream Factory disc also includes the 1981 TV-Movie reunion, Munster’s Revenge, with yet another Marilyn.
