Garv’s Pick of the Week: This Gun for Hire (Shout Select)
For the release week of April 9th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: This Gun For Hire [Blu-ray / Shout Select]
: After ten years in motion pictures, Alan Ladd was cast in a supporting role opposite Veronica Lake, and he became an overnight sensation. The compact pair sizzled on screen together, which led to additional pairings (seven in all). Seventy-five years after this film was released, their chemistry is still palpable. It’s a nifty little noir as well.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]
: This mashup between the horror of Hammer and the kung-fu of the Shaw Brothers is a bit of a mess. Still, it has Peter Cushing as Van Helsing, so all good.
Iguana With The Tongue Of Fire, The [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]
: This giallo is oddly set in Dublin. Otherwise, the only thing I know about it is it has a really cool title.
Stranger than Paradise [Blu-ray / Criterion]
: Criterion has two Jim Jarmusch Blu-ray upgrades today. Three, actually. This release includes Jarmusch’s first film, Permanent Vacation, as an extra.
Night on Earth [Blu-ray / Criterion]
: More Jarmusch. This time with 100% more Roberto Benigni.
Emmanuelle [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: The first three films in this influential series get a HD upgrade today. Influential? Undoubtedly. Good? Kinda.
Emmanuelle 2 [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: This is the steamiest of the series. My glasses are fogging up.
Goodbye Emmanuelle [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: Goodbye? We were just getting to know you.
