Garv’s Pick of the Week: Thoroughly Modern Millie
For the release week of August 24th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Thoroughly Modern Millie [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: “Raspberries!” Kino Lorber is releasing Universal Pictures’ 4K restoration of the original Roadshow version of this 1967 musical (set in the 1920s). I’m looking forward to revisiting this one, which was a favorite of my childhood. As I remember, it was pretty campy and had a handful of memorable tunes. It also has a fantastic cast, led by Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Channing, and Beatrice Lillie. Keep an eye out for a full review in the future.
Additional Titles of Interest —
What’s So Bad About Feeling Good? [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Mary Tyler Moore also stars in this comedy about a virus, carried by a Toucan, that causes a sense of euphoria. I would have loved to have been in the room for that pitch meeting.
The Oh, God! Collection [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: Carl Reiner’s Oh God (1977) and its two lesser sequels get the box set treatment from Shout Select.
Prince of the City [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: Some have called this 1981 Sidney Lumet drama “the last of the great 1970s thrillers.” I’m not calling it anything yet, because I’ve never seen it.
The Cat o’ Nine Tails [4K UHD/ Arrow Video]: The second of Dario Argento’s giallo “animal trilogy” gets a 4K UHD upgrade, for those of you who have been longing to see Karl Maldon with pinpoint sharpness.
Two Evil Eyes [4K UHD/ Blue Underground]: Also getting a 4K UHD upgrade this week is this team up of Dario Argento and George A. Romero.
