Garv’s Pick of the Week: War and Peace (Criterion)
For the release week of June 25th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: War and Peace [Blu-ray / Criterion]
: The 1966 Soviet-produced, epic 7-hour film adaptation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace may sound like a lot to chew on. However, the trailer above looks fantastic, and you don’t have to worry about bathroom breaks when watching at home. Think of it as like a TV miniseries that you would binge on Netflix.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Wild Heart / Gone to Earth [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: This Blu-ray has been much delayed, but it’s likely so Kino Lorber could include both the original 110 minute Powell/Pressburger film and David O. Selznick’s 80 minute re-edited version. I’m always happy to see an HD upgrade of any title from the greatest British directing team in the history of cinema.
Gaslight [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]
: Pretty good for a remake.
The Tamarind Seed [Blu-ray / Scorpion Releasing]
: Blake Edwards directed his better half in this Cold War romantic drama, and she’s always a spoonful of sugar.
Midnight Lace [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: Don’t make Doris Day cry, you monsters!
How to Stuff a Wild Bikini [Blu-ray / Olive Films]
: Buster Keaton makes torpedo juice. Was The Master a sequel to How to Stuff a Wild Bikini?
Lost Highway [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: I didn’t need a David Lynch movie to know that Robert Blake was creepy.
24 Hour Party People [Blu-ray / MVD Marquee Collection]
: Teaming Steve Coogan with director Michael Winterbottom is always a good thing.
Night Of The Creeps [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]
: “Thrill me.”
New York Ripper, The [Blu-ray + DVD + CD / Blue Underground]
: If it talks like a duck…
