Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Complete Films of Agnès Varda (Criterion)
For the release week of August 11th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Complete Films of Agnès Varda [Blu-ray / Criterion]: All thirty-nine films (features, shorts, and documentaries) by French filmmaker Agnès Varda are collected in this massive 15-disc Blu-ray set. Admittedly, I have only seen a handful of these films, but I don’t think that fans of art movies or documentaries could go wrong with this collection.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Phantom of the Opera [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: The 1962 Hammer Studios version of the oft-told tale gets the Scream Factory Collector’s Edition treatment. Hammer’s greatest filmmaker, Terence Fisher, directs Herbert “Chief Inspector Dreyfuss” Lom as the titular masked menace.
Elvis: That’s the Way It Is [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: After the success of the 1969 television special, Elvis Presley allowed film crews to follow him on his 1970 tour. This 2-disc Blu-ray re-release from the Warner Archive includes two different versions of the film: the original theatrical version and the 2001 revised version (with more performance footage).
Tender Mercies [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Robert Duvall won the Best Actor Oscar for this memorable character study.
