Garv’s Pick of the Week: Krampus: The Naughty Cut (4K UHD, Scream Factory)

For the release week of December 7th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Krampus: The Naughty Cut [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: ‘Tis the season for Christmas movies. However, I prefer a little darkness with my holiday cheer, and Krampus (2015) fills the bill nicely. Mixing horror, dark humor, and the holiday, the film feels like the best Joe Dante film that Joe Dante never made. This release not only upgrades the video to 4K UHD. It also features a few extra minutes of footage that had to be trimmed to qualify for a PG-13 rating.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Long Goodbye [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Robert Altman’s 1973 take on the character Philip Marlowe may not be my “Pick of the Week,” but it is probably my favorite film being released this week. I didn’t put it in the top spot, because the film received a previous Blu-ray release from Kino. This release is from a new 4K scan and restoration, so it might be worth picking up even if you have the previous disc.

Busting [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino is also giving this 1974 actioner with Elliott Gould and Robert Blake a Blu-ray re-release.

Harold and Maude [Blu-ray / Paramount Presents]: While Harold and Maude previously received a Criterion release, this Paramount Presents presentation is from an exclusive, new 4K restoration.

Angels With Dirty Faces [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Just about everybody from Warner Brothers’ lot are in this 1938 gangster film, including James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, George Bancroft, and The Dead End Kids.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America [Blu-ray / Paramount]: As with all of Mike Judge’s projects, this animated feature is better than you would expect.

Mill of the Stone Women [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Giorgio Ferroni’s 1960 Italian/French gothic horror film is often compared to the work of Mario Bava. That’s good enough for me.

Hard Target [4K UHD / Kino Lorber]: John Woo’s take on “The Most Dangerous Game” with Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of his better American films. It’s hard not to love a movie that features Wilford Brimley shooting arrows while on horseback.

Werewolves Within [Blu-ray / RLJ Entertainment]: I haven’t seen this 2021 release yet, but Sam Richardson and Milana Vayntrub are two of my favorite actors working today.

The Andy Griffith Show: The Complete Series [Blu-ray / Paramount]: All eight seasons and 249 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show are gathered in this Blu-ray box set. What? They didn’t include Mayberry R.F. D.?

  1. The old “The Long Goodbye” Blu-ray was also a Kino Lorber release, but it was one their all-time best sellers, so they have gone to a lot of trouble of giving it a 4K remastering on Blu-ray with a lot of new bonus extras. The first release was very no frills, but this release looks really good.

    1. You’re right. I was misremembering it as a Twilight Time disc. I even own the original Blu-ray, so I should have checked. I’ll edit the post.
