Garv’s Pick of the Week: Party Girl [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Here’ an interesting genre mashup. Nicholas Ray (In a Lonely Place) directs a film noir in color and CinemaScope with musical dance numbers. Cyd Charisse and her photogenic legs star opposite Robert Taylor in a this lurid story about a mob lawyer’s romance with a chorus girl. Lee J. Cobb plays a gangster modeled after Al Capone. This film would pair well with Love Me or Leave Me (1955).

Heaven Can Wait [Blu-ray / Paramount]:Warren Beatty and Elaine May co-wrote this 1978 remake of the 1941 romantic comedy Here Comes Mr . Jordan; and Beatty and Buck Henry co-directed. Beatty also starred with Julie Christie, James Mason, Jack Warden, Dyan Cannon, and Charles Grodin.

Reds [Blu-ray / Paramount]:Beatty co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in this historical epic about the Russian Revolution. Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson are notable in a very large cast.

To Hell and Back [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Audie Murphy plays himself in this biopic about his World War II experiences.

Jet Pilot [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Did Howard Hughes ever produce a film that didn’t run over time and over budget? This Josef von Sternberg aviation romance with John Wayne and Janet Leigh began production in 1949. The last day of shooting was in 1953. The film was eventually released in 1957.
