Garv’s Pick of the Week: The House That Screamed [Blu-ray/ Arrow Video]: I’ve never seen this 1969 Spanish shocker from director Narciso Ibáñez Serrador (Who Can Kill a Child), but I’m a sucker for 1960’s European horror flicks. This one is supposed to be an above-average, atmospheric thriller. Being that it involves the murders of young women in a boarding school, the film has also been described as a precursor for Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The Blu-ray from Arrow Video (the Criterion of Cult) features a new restoration of two cuts of the film — the 105 minute uncut version, La Residencia, with both original English and Spanish audio; and the 94 minute US theatrical version, re-titled The House that Screamed.

Mildred Pierce [4K UHD / Criterion]: It’s a very female-centric Blu-ray week, with a number of films focusing on female protagonists. This noirish melodrama, featuring one of Joan Crawford’s best performances, is the most well known and respected title being released this week. Consequently, it’s getting a 4K UHD upgrade from Criterion (the Criterion of Criterions).
I’ll Cry Tomorrow [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Susan Hayward received an Oscar Nomination for Best Actress for her performance in this biopic covering actress Lillian Roth’s bouts with alcoholism. Personally, I’d rather see a documentary on the real Roth, but for a biopic, this ain’t bad.
Camille [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Garbo coughs!
Little Miss Marker [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Shirley Temple and Adolphe Menjou star in the first of many film adaptations of Damon Runyon’s popular short story.
