Garv’s Pick of the Week: Double Crossbones (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of March 14th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Double Crossbones [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: There are some interesting catalog titles hitting home video this week. Of the lot, I’m most curious about this pirate-themed comedy starring the great Donald O’Connor. O’Connor called the film “one of the worst pictures ever made,” but it features pirates, comedy, music, and dancing. How bad could it be?

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Prince and the Showgirl [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: This is a mid-level Marilyn Monroe movie, but the Blu-ray release is very special, as it is the first time that The Prince and the Showgirl is presented on home video in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Prior releases have been cropped at 1.33:1.

Trade Winds [DVD / ClassicFlix]: Fredric March and Joan Bennett star in this mystery with romantic comedy touches. Ann Sothern, Ralph Bellamy, Thomas Mitchell provide support.

Neptune’s Daughter [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: This is the second musical comedy that paired Red Skelton and Esther Williams. The film is most notable for introducing the song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Hour of the Gun  [Blu-ray/ MGM]: Wyatt Earp (James Garner) and Doc Holiday (Jason Robards) go up against Ike Clanton (Robert Ryan) in the aftermath of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Confessions of a Nazi Spy [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Edward G. Robinson stars as an FBI agent in this 1939 spy thriller, which was the first explicitly anti-Nazi feature produced by a major Hollywood Studio.

Flamingo Road [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: If you didn’t get enough noirish melodrama with Joan Crawford in last week’s release of Mildred Pierce, this should hit the spot.
