Garv’s Pick of the Week: A Clockwork Orange 4K UHD (Warner Brothers)

For the release week of September 21st:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: A Clockwork Orange [4K UHD / Warner Brothers]: Stanley Kubrick’s controversial dark, violent social satire gets an upgrade to 4K UHD. Being that the visuals are so important to the film, the bump in pixels should be a welcome improvement. Audiences tend to be mixed on this title, but I think it is one of Kubrick’s very best films. The synthesized classical soundtrack is also one of the greatest scores of the 1970s.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Naked Spur [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The third of Anthony Mann’s Western collaborations with James Stewart is one of the best films of both actor and director. Prior video releases of this film have been muddy, but the new Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray is a sharp, vibrant Technicolor transfer. You can find my full review HERE.

Straight Time [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Dustin Hoffman stars in this 1978 drama about an ex-con trying to go straight. The film is based on a novel by Edward “Mr. Blue” Bunker.

Dementia 13: Director’s Cut [Blu-ray / Vestron-Lionsgate]: Francis Ford Coppola has gone back to his restore and re-cut his directorial debut. It will be interesting to see how this version differs from the one that has been available in the public domain.

Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: “Cleaning woman!”

International Lady [Blu-ray / ClassicFlix]: ClassicFlix takes its DVD-only Silver Series to Blu-ray with this 1941 spy thriller with Basil Rathbone.

Pufnstuf [Blu-ray / Code Red]: Sid and Marty Krofft’s nightmare fuel made a leap to the big screen in this theatrical spin-off of the kiddie TV series.

Doctor Who: Sylvester McCoy: Complete Season One [DVD/ BBC]: The BBC’s complete season Blu-ray releases of classic Doctor Who continues with the first year of Sylvester McCoy’s tenue.
