Garv’s Pick of the Week: A Matter of Life and Death (Criterion)

For the release week of July 24th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: A Matter of Life and Death [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Some weeks it is difficult to choose my “pick” between a couple of deserving titles or to find a worthwhile title amongst a meager selection.  This is not one of those weeks.  Michael Powell and Emric Pressburger’s A Matter of Life and Death is far and away the best release this week.  It is a cinematic masterpiece with an affecting story and some of the most beautiful images ever committed to film.  It is quite simply a “must buy.”

Additional Titles of Interest —

In the Mouth of Madness [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: One of the best of John Carpenter’s later films gets the Scream Factory special edition treatment.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Take note, Carpenter completists.  One of the director’s lesser films also receives the special edition treatment.

I Walk Alone [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Burt Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott, and Kirk Douglas.  Now, there’s a film noir cast!

Ready Player One [4K UHD+BD / Warner Brothers]: I hear that this Speilberg kid is pretty good.
