Garv’s Pick of the Week: Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection (Shout Select)
For the release week of November 19th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: Heeeeeyyyyyyyy, Abbott! All 28 movies A&C starred in for Universal Studios get an HD release in this 15-Disc box set. In addition to the upgrade in picture and sound quality, the set also features new audio commentaries and extras that weren’t provided on prior DVD releases.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Bad and the Beautiful [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner star in one of Hollywood’s best movies about Hollywood, but for me, the real standouts are Dick Powell and Gloria Grahame.
Scarface [Blu-ray / Universal]: This is the Blu-ray debut of the original 1932 Howard Hawks film, rather than the coked-up Al Pacino version. Keep an eye out for a pre-stardom Boris Karloff.
Un Flic [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Jean-Pierre Melville’s French crime films are always worth picking up.
Suspiria [4K UHD/ Synapse]: The Synapse Blu-ray of Suspiria was “reference quality” great. It will be interesting to see how much better the image can look in 4K UHD.
Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol [Blu-ray / Universal]: I’d rank this animated Christmas special as second only to A Charlie Brown Christmas.
