Garv’s Pick of the Week: Black Christmas (4K UHD, Scream Factory)
For the release week of December 6th:
Black Christmas [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: Before Bob Clark scared kids with threats of shooting one’s own eye out, he created this nightmare Christmas film for adults. Black Christmas (1974) predated and influenced John Carpenter’s Halloween, and it is often considered the first slasher movie. It’s certainly one of the best, and for my money, it’s the creepiest. If you’re looking for some sour to even out the sweetness of holiday movies, Black Christmas is just what you need.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Pulp Fiction [4K UHD / Paramount]: Quentin Tarantino’s most influential film also gets a 4K UHD upgrade this week. I think I like the Bruce Willis section the best.
48 Hrs. / Another 48 Hrs. [4K UHD / Paramount]: You get two Walter Hill movies for the price of two in this collection, but at least you’ll save some shelf space.
Shawscope Volume Two [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Arrow Video, the “Criterion of Cult,” will release a sequel to their massive Shaw Brothers box set. This collection features 14 films on 9 Blu-rays, plus 2 CDs of soundtrack selections. The included movies are The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Return to the 36th Chamber, Disciples of the 36th Chamber, Mad Monkey Kung Fu, Five Superfighters, Invincible Shaolin, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians, Ten Tigers of Kwangtung, My Young Auntie, Mercenaries from Hong Kong, The Boxer’s Omen, Martial Arts of Shaolin, and The Bare-Footed Kid.
Better Call Saul: The Complete Series [Blu-ray/ Sony]: This prequel to the television series Breaking Bad turned out to be even better than its predecessor.
