Garv’s Pick of the Week: Sherlock Hound: Complete & Unabridged (Discotek Media)

For the release week of November 29th:

Sherlock Hound: Complete & Unabridged [Blu-ray / Discotek Media]: I love Sherlock Holmes. I loved dogs. And I love Hayao Miyazaki. Consequently, I’ve always been curious about this animated TV series, featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters as anthropomorphic canines. Miyazaki helped create the show and directed six of the twenty-six episodes (before going on to greater acclaim with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and subsequent films). The show is presented both in the original Japanese language (with subtitles) or dubbed in English. While many fans consider it heresy, I prefer watching dubbed anime, so I can focus on the artwork.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Cutter’s Way [Blu-ray / Fun City Editions]: Cutter’s Way was released in 1981, but it is a disillusioned Seventies film through and through. I think it’s the best movie being released this week, despite being in the second spot in this list. John Heard delivers a powerhouse performance, and Jeff Bridges and Lisa Eichhorn are also excellent.

Detective Story [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: William Wyler directs, Kirk Douglas emotes, and Kino Lorber provides a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative.

Peking Express [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Joseph Cotten, Corinne Calvet, and Edmund Gwenn ride a choo-choo in William Dieterle’s 1951 remake of Josef von Sternberg’s Shanghai Express. This also received a 4K restoration.

French Noir Collection [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: This two-disc set includes Speaking of Murder a.k.a. Le rouge est mis (1957, with Jean Gabin), Back to the Wall a.k.a. Le dos au mur (1958, with Jeanne Moreau), and Witness in the City a.k.a. Un témoin dans la ville (1959, with Lino Ventura). I haven’t seen any of them, but I love French noir.
