Garv’s Pick of the Week: Bringing Up Baby (Criterion)
For the release week of July 6th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Bringing Up Baby [Blu-ray/ Criterion]: There is a difference between a romantic comedy and a screwball comedy. When you have elements such as a couple of leopards on the loose, a missing dinosaur bone, and an ill-behaved pooch, you are definitely in the realm of “screwball.” Cary Grant plays more buttoned-up than usual as a paleontologist who gets mixed up with the most manic of “manic pixie dream girls,” Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn). Movies don’t get much more fun than this.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb [4K UHD/ Sony]: Stanley Kubrick’s cold war satire is just one of the greatest comedies every made. The widescreen photography should look amazing in 4K UHD.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World [4K UHD/ Universal]: Edgar Wright’s films always look fantastic. The color should really pop in this 4K UHD upgrade.
48 Hrs. [Blu-ray/ Paramount Presents]: Walter Hill’s crime thriller/buddy film starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy is an 80s classic. While it has been on Blu-ray before, this release is from a new 4K restoration.
Another 48 Hrs. [Blu-ray/ Paramount Presents]: The 1990 sequel also gets a re-release under the Paramount Presents label.
Icy Breasts (Les seins de glace) [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: A couple of French crime films starring Alain Delon, including this suggestively named 1974 thriller, get a U.S. Blu-ray debut this week.
The Widow Couderc (Le veuve Couderc) [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Here’s another one with Alain Delon.
The Crimes of the Black Cat [Blu-ray / Cauldron Films]: Giallo, anyone?
The House on Sorority Row [Blu-ray / MVD Rewind Collection]: I’m not a big fan of the slasher genre, but this is supposed to be one of the more interesting ones.
