Garv’s Pick of the Week: Buffet Froid (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of November 12th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Buffet Froid [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: While I’m a little hesitant to recommend a film I have not yet seen as my “Pick” of this week’s video releases (especially when The Far Country and Charley Varrick are also making their Blu-ray debuts), the trailer for this French dark comedy looks like a lot of fun.  Consequently, I’m more eager to check out this release than those titles that I already know and love.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Far Country [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: James Stewart teamed with director Anthony Mann for a beloved series of five adult Westerns.  They have slowly been trickling out on Blu-ray.  At this point, only Winchester ‘73 and The Naked Spur need an HD upgrade.

Charley Varrick [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Walter Matthau stars in one of the best action thrillers of the 1970s, as a bank robber keeping one step ahead of the Mob, after accidentally stealing Mafia money.  I love that in the Seventies someone who looked like Walter Matthau could play the dramatic and romantic lead.

Madigan [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Prior to giving the world Dirty Harry, Don Siegel served up a cop thriller with Richard Widmark as the titular Madigan.

The Gun Runners [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Don Siegel also directed the third movie version of Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not.  This time Audie Murphy steps into the role previously inhabited by Humphrey Bogart and John Garfield.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Don Siegel isn’t connected to this action flick, but his frequent collaborator, Clint Eastwood, is.  Jeff Bridges also tags along.

The Red Rider [Blu-ray / VCI]: Four multi-chapter Universal serials are being upgraded to HD by VCI Entertainment this week.  The first two are cowpoke cliffhangers starring Buck Jones, beginning with this 15-chapter Western from 1934.

The Roaring West [Blu-ray / VCI]: Buck Jones returns in this 15-chapter oater from 1935.

The Phantom Creeps [Blu-ray / VCI]: Bela Lugosi is a mad scientist bent on world domination in this 12-chapter sci-fi serial from 1939.

The Mysterious Mr. M [Blu-ray / VCI]: Universal’s theatrical serial output ended in 1946 with these 13-chapters.
