Garv’s Pick of the Week: Chicago (1927, Flicker Alley)

For the release week of October 6th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Chicago [Blu-ray / Flicker Alley]: There were many film versions of the Roxie Hart story before Renée Zellweger took on the role.  This 1927 film version, starring Phyllis Haver as Roxie, was once thought to be a lost film, until a near-perfect print was discovered in the private collection of producer Cecil B. DeMille.  While the direction is credited to Frank Urson, many believe that DeMille directed the film himself.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Pierrot le fou [Blu-ray / Criterion]The cinema of Jean-Luc Godard is one of my cinematic black holes.  However, what I’ve seen of his 1960s work is at least interesting.  This is one of the best loved of that period, so I should probably get around to watching it one of these days.

Curse of the Undead [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]This 1959 production touts itself as cinema’s first vampire Western, it’s also supposed to be one of the best.  Of course, when you’re making comparisons to Billy the Kid Versus Dracula, the bar is set pretty low.

The Fighting Fist of Shanghai Joe [Blu-ray / Wild East Productions]: It’s a week for genre mash-ups, because this 1973 film combines the Spaghetti Western with Hong Kong martial arts action.  This title does not appear to be available on Amazon at this time.  However, it can be obtained from Wild East’s website.
