Garv’s Pick of the Week: Citizen Kane (4K UHD, Criterion)
For the release week of November 23rd:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Citizen Kane [4K UHD / Criterion]: If Citizen Kane isn’t the greatest movie of all time (and it may be), it is probably the most influential. New audiences may not realize how revolutionary Orson Welles’ first film was in 1941, because so many movies that came after it borrowed its structure, camera tricks, and general audacity. The Criterion 4K UHD edition is one of their most packed releases for a single film. In edition to the 4K disc, the package includes three Blu-rays, containing the film, documentaries, three audio commentaries, interviews, a few of Welles’ The Mercury Theatre on the Air radio shows, and much more. For classic film lovers, this is about as essential a purchase as has ever been released.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Uncut Gems [4K UHD / Criterion]: Criterion is also giving the Safdie Brothers’ 2019 thriller Uncut Gems a 4K UHD release this week. It ain’t Citizen Kane, but it’s pretty darn good.
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers [4K UHD / Kino Lorber]: Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of the 1956 sci-fi classic is the rare remake that improves upon the original.
The Thin Man Goes Home [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The penultimate film in the popular screwball mystery series, starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Asta, gets an HD release from the Warner Archive. Five down, one to go.
Dracula: Dead and Loving It [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: I haven’t watched it recently, but I remember thinking that Dracula: Dead and Loving It was one of the stronger later Mel Brooks movies. I also remember that I was in the minority with that opinion.
Night Gallery: Season 1 [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Rod Serling followed up his classic Twilight Zone television series with this lesser-remembered horror anthology show. There were installments of this series that gave me nightmares as a kid (and that’s a good thing).
