Garv’s Pick of the Week: Ragtime (Paramount Presents)

For the release week of November 16th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Ragtime [Blu-ray / Paramount Presents]: Milos Forman’s 1981 adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s novel, which brought James Cagney back to the screen, finally gets a Blu-ray release. Two versions of the film are included — The original theatrical release cut and the recently discovered Director’s Cut Workprint, which is 19 minutes longer. I love the original, and I’m really looking forward to checking out the longer version. In addition, the score is arguably Randy Newman’s best.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Jet Li stars as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-Hung in this popular, six-film martial arts action series. This Criterion box set includes all of the films and copious special features.

Mulholland Drive [4K UHD / Criterion]: Criterion gets into the 4K UHD business with a new edition of David Lynch’s 2001 bizarro thriller.

Mad Max Anthology [4K UHD / Warner Brothers]: All four films in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series — Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and Mad Max: Fury Road — get the 4K UHD treatment in this 4-disc box set.

Some Came Running [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: When Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin actually tried, they were very good actors. They actually tried in this one. Shirley MacLaine co-stars (and she always tried).

The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart [Blu-ray / Warner Brothers]: This excellent documentary on the brothers Gibb somehow completely ignores the making of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978). Hmm.
