Garv’s Pick of the Week: Dreamchild (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of September 20th:
Dreamchild [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: I’ve never seen this fictionalized story of the later years of Alice Lindell (the basis for Alice in Alice in Wonderland). However, I love the work of author and poet Lewis Carroll, and the film has a screenplay by the brilliant television writer Dennis Potter (The Singing Detective). In addition, The Jim Henson puppeteers bring to life some of the Wonderland characters in fantasy sequences. Curiouser and curiouser!
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: You don’t get a much better noir cast than Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott, and Kirk Douglas. The movie gets a much needed 4K restoration.
The Turning Point [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This 1952 noir stars William Holden, Edmond O’Brien, and Alexis Smith.
Ace High [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Eli Wallach meets Euro-Western regulars Terence Hill and Bud Spencer in this lesser-known, but well-regarded, Spaghetti Western.
Love and Death [Blu-ray / Sandpiper Pictures]: Sandpiper Pictures is re-releasing three early Woody Allen films on Blu-ray, because the original Twilight Time Blu-rays are out-of-print. For my money, Love and Death is Woody’s funniest film. It’s basically a Bob Hope movie, with some Russian literary references thrown in.
Bananas [Blu-ray / Sandpiper Pictures]: This 1971 comedy features Woody Allen’s best character name — Fielding Mellish.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex *But Were Afraid to Ask [Blu-ray / Sandpiper Pictures]: This comedy anthology film, based upon the best-selling self-help book, is a mixed bag, but it features some very funny sequences.
