Garv’s Pick of the Week: Drunken Master II (Warner Archive)
For the release week of May 18th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Drunken Master II [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Many consider Drunken Master II to be Jackie Chan’s finest film, and I can’t help but agree. This fast-paced flick contains some of Chan’s greatest action set pieces, and it has a solid story. Jackie plays Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-Hung, who fights better when he’s drunk (like Popeye after downing a can of spinach). Previously, this film was only available in the U.S. in a truncated version, titled The Legend of Drunken Master. Happily, the Warner Archive Collection has gone back to the original camera negative to provide the complete, high-octane Hong Kong cut.
Additional Titles of Interest —
It Happened Tomorrow [Blu-ray / Cohen Film Collection]: This is the lesser-known gem of the week. Dick Powell, Linda Darnell, and Jack Oakie star in this romantic-comedy-fantasy for director René Clair. It’s about a newspaperman (Powell) who gets his hands on tomorrow’s newspaper before the events actually happen.
National Lampoon’s Animal House [4K UHD / Universal]: If you don’t pick up this 4K Ultra Definition Blu-ray of John Landis’ frat house comedy, you’ll be put on double secret probabation.
The Sting [4K UHD / Universal]: As soon as you read the title, the tune of Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” got stuck in your head. Didn’t it?
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: This was The Money Pit before The Money Pit was The Money Pit.
Escape From Fort Bravo [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: William Holden, Eleanor Parker, John Forsythe, and the immortal William Demarest star in this Civil War Western from director John Sturges.
The Snoopy 4-Movie Collection [Blu-ray / Paramount]: The four theatrical feature films starring the Peanuts gang — A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969), Snoopy, Come Home (1972), Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown (1977), and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don’t Come Back!! (1980) — are gathered together in this collection.
