Garv’s Pick of the Week: Häxan (Criterion)

For the release week of October 15th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Häxan [Blu-ray / Criterion]: This 1922 Swedish/Danish silent documentary-style witchcraft horror contains some of the most wonderfully weird imagery you’ve ever seen.  I once put it on in the background of a Halloween party, and slowly the guests began to group around the television.  Everyone had the same initial response — “What the f*** is this?”  I can’t wait to see the film upgraded to HD.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Fearless Vampire Killers [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: I’ve always considered Roman Polanski’s horror spoof to be a Christmas movie, because it has the most beautiful snow scenes ever committed to film.  They have a fairytale, Rankin-Bass feel to them.  The film should look gorgeous on Blu-ray.

Our Hospitality [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Lobster Films’ new 2K restoration of one of Buster Keaton’s best silent features belongs in the library of every fan of classic comedy.  This is probably my second favorite Keaton film, after The General.  Here’s a link to my full review.

The Queen of Spades [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: I’ve heard great things about this black & white British chiller starring Anton “The Red Shoes” Walbrook.

And Soon the Darkness [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Director Robert Fuest followed up his campy Dr. Phibes films with this suspense-horror set in English countryside.

Killer Nun [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Killing is getting to be a habit with her.  Get it?  Nun.  Habit.

Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee Complete Season Four [Blu-ray / BBC]: The final season for the frilliest of Doctors gets an HD upgrade.  Before you insert the discs in your Blu-ray player, be sure to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.
