Garv’s Pick of the Week: If I Were King (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of February 7th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: If I Were King [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Imagine an Errol Flynn swashbuckler with a Preston Sturges script, and you have If I Were King. This delightful confection stars the melodious-throated Ronald Colman, but Basil Rathbone really steals the show with an atypical, comedic performance. The disc is highly recommended, and you can read my full review HERE.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Sorrowful Jones [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Bob Hope and Lucille Ball team up for the first of their four features together. It’s the second film version of Damon Runyon’s Little Miss Marker. Look for a full review of the disc in the near future.

Bubba Ho-Tep [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: A geriatric Elvis (Bruce Campbell) and John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis) team up to kick the butt of a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy in a Texas retirement home. The rumors of their deaths have been greatly exaggerated. I can’t image that this low-budget Don Coscarelli film will get much of a visual boost from the 4K upgrade, but if you don’t already own the film, you might as well get the best version.

Congress Dances [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: I know nothing about this 1931 German comic operetta. However I find the words “1931” and “operetta” intriguing. Your mileage may vary.

Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 1 [Blu-ray/ Disney]: The following classic Disney cartoons are compiled in this 2-disc set: Steamboat Willie (1928), On Ice (1935), Thru the Mirror (1936), Hawaiian Holiday (1937, Brave Little Tailor (1938), Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip (1940), The Little Whirlwind (1941), Bath Day (1946), Figaro and Frankie (1947), and Mickey’s Delayed Date (1947). The animation is excellent. I just wish they were funnier.
