Garv’s Pick of the Week: Indiana Jones: 4-Movie Collection 4K UHD (Paramount)

For the release week of June 8th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Indiana Jones: 4-Movie Collection [4K UHD/ Paramount]: The greatest movie theater experience of my life was seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark in its original theatrical run when I was twelve. I was already enough of a film nerd that I was recognizing stunts from Stagecoach (1939) and Zorro’s Fighting Legion (also 1939). Now the first four films in the series are getting a 4K UHD upgrade in this box set, with a fifth disc of behind-the-scenes bonus materials. The fifth film has just gone into production, which hopefully will be an improvement over Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Unlike the Star Trek films, the odd-numbered films in the Indiana Jones series are the best, so I hope that pattern continues.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Cartouche [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Speaking of adventure, a couple of Philippe de Broca-directed French adventure films starring Jean-Paul Belmondo get a Blu-ray release in the U.S. this week. The first is a 1962 swashbuckler.

Le Magnifique [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: The second is this 1973 spy spoof, co-starring Jacqueline Bisset.

There Was a Crooked Man [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The Western meets the prison escape genre in 1970’s There Was a Crooked Man. Kirk Douglas and Henry Fonda star.

Puzzle [Blu-ray / VCI]: I hadn’t heard of this Italian thriller, but I gialli are not-too-guilty pleasures for me, so I’m intrigued.

Baseball [Blu-ray / PBS]: Ken Burn’s documentary mini-series gets an HD release. However, the aspect ratio has been changed from 4×3 to 16×9, so buyer beware.
