Garv’s Pick of the Week: Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color (Flicker Alley)

For the release week of December 18th:

Being that next Tuesday is Christmas Day, there are basically no new releases next week.  Consequently, this week is particularly packed with big titles.  Any of the runners up this week could have been my top pick in any other week; so strap in and open up your wallets.  Here we go!

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color [Blu-ray + DVD / Flicker Alley]: Flicker Alley collects the new Lobster Films restorations of thirteen fantastical silent shorts from 1899-1909 from movie magician Georges Méliès.  The films are presented in their original hand-colored form.  To see what I mean, check out the trailer above.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Horror of Dracula [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: While the Méliès set is the most important release of the week, the disc that I will likely watch the most times is the Warner Archive’s Blu-ray release of Horror of Dracula.  Click here for my full review of this fang-tastic Blu-ray.

Dracula: Prince Of Darkness [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: This pretty good sequel to Horror of Dracula gets the Scream Factory special edition treatment.  For Hammer fans, this is another essential purchase.  However, it is missing Peter Cushing’s magnificent portrayal of Van Helsing, so the original will always tower above it.

Murder By Death [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: Neil Simon’s satire of “who dunnits” features a terrific ensemble, but Peter Falk steals the movie outright from his costars.

The Jerk: 40th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: He was born a poor, black child.

The Sea Hawk [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Errol Flynn swashes a buckle on the high seas.

Dark of the Sun [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Rod Taylor and Jim Brown are men on a mission.  Warners has assembled an incredible lineup for the film’s audio commentary: Trailers From Hell’s Larry Karaszewski and Josh Olson with Pure Cinema Podcast’s Brian Saur and Elric D. Kane.

Starman (Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: Jeff Bridges teams with the luminous Karen Allen and director John Carpenter for this Sci-fi romance.

Marwencol: Special Edition [Blu-ray / Cinema Guild]: The documentary true story behind the upcoming Robert Zemeckis film get a special edition re-release.
