Garv’s Pick of the Week: No Way to Treat a Lady (Scream Factory)

For the release week of December 21st and 28th:

New releases tend to be scant during the last couple of weeks of December. Consequently, I’m combining my picks for this and next week into this single post. Later in the week, I’ll post my top picks of the year!

Garv’s Pick of the Week: No Way to Treat a Lady [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Rod Steiger had one of his greatest acting showcases as a flamboyant serial killer with multiple disguises and mommy issues in this 1968 black comedy thriller. George Segal plays the cop on Steiger’s trail, and Lee Remick is the love interest who gets mixed up in the killer and cop’s game of cat and mouse. This movie is an overlooked gem.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Lady in a Cage [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: James Caan had his first substantial role in a feature film (after a uncredited bit part in Irma La Douce) in this 1964 thriller. He’s a hoodlum tormenting Olivia De Havilland (playing the titular character).

The Vampire Lovers [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Ingrid Pitt, Peter Cushing, Kate O’Mara, and Madeline Smith are all better than the material they are given here, but the moviet still has a bit of the Hammer polish and magic.

Trog [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Joan Crawford co-stars with a guy in a troglodyte costume in this legendary bad movie.

No Time to Die [4K UHD / Universal]: Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond comes to an explosive end in No Time to Die. The film takes some big (somewhat controversial) swings, and I think they pay off beautifully. Also, Ana de Armas totally steals the movie in her 10 minutes on screen. The producers should really consider spinning off her character into a series of her own.

Shawscope Volume One [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: The big release for December 28th is this mammoth collection of Kung-Fu action films produced by the legendary Shaw Brothers between 1972 and 1979. The first of what Arrow Video promises to be a multi-volume series includes the following movies: King Boxer, The Boxer from Shantung, Five Shaolin Masters, Shaolin Temple, Mighty Peking Man, Challenge of the Masters, Executioners from Shaolin, Chinatown Kid, The Five Venoms, Crippled Avengers, Heroes of the East, and Dirty Ho.
