Garv’s Pick of the Week: Pal Joey (Sony)

For the release week of July 20th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Pal Joey [Blu-ray/ Sony]: I can’t think of another film role that fit Frank Sinatra quite so well as that of saloon singer Joey Evans in the Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey. For me, this is “THE” Frank Sinatra movie. The soundtrack includes classics such as, “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “I Could Right a Book,” “My Funny Valentine,” “I Didn’t Know What Time it Was,” and “Bewitched.” Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak also get their chance to perform a few numbers. This film receive a limited Blu-ray release from Twilight Time back in 2012, but that disc is long out of print. Here’s your second chance to pick up this classic musical.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Bye Bye Birdie [Blu-ray/ Sony]: This popular musical starring Dick Van Dyke, Janet Leigh, Ann-Margret, and Paul Lynde also gets a re-release to replace another out of print Twilight Time disc.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: This middling MGM musical with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Esther Williams gets its inaugural Blu-ray release.

Step by Step [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: Before Lawrence Tierney lost his hair, he starred in this noirish drama.

I Wouldn’t Be in Your Shoes [Blu-ray/ Warner Archive]: This 1948 noir features a no-star cast and a Cornell Woolrich story.

The Gilded Lily [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This week, Kino Lorber is releasing a couple of 1930s romantic comedies starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. I’m unfamiliar with this 1935 film, but I love both the time period and the genre.

The Bride Comes Home [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This Colbert/MacMurray joint is also from 1935. They really cranked them out back then.
