Garv’s Pick of the Week: Speed (4K UHD, Twentieth Century Studios)

For the release week of May 4th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Speed [4K UHD / Twentieth Century Studios]: “Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?” Speed (1994) is one of the best action movies to come out in the wake of Die Hard (1988), and this week it gets a 4K UHD upgrade. I always thought that Keanu’s performance was perfect in this film, as the character seems dumb enough to actually try the crazy stuff he does in the movie. Sandra Bullock steals the movie with her career-making performance, and Dennis Hopper makes a fantastic mad bomber.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Hot Spot [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Speaking of Dennis Hopper, he directed this neo-noir in 1990 with Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Connelly, Charles Martin Smith, and William Sadler. The Blu-ray is taken from a new 2K master that was color-graded and approved by cinematographer Ueli Steiger.

Sweet Liberty [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: There was a short period in the 1980s, when Alan Alda created a handful of low key comedies, in which he wrote, directed, and starred (à la Woody Allen or Albert Brooks). I don’t think I’ve seen this one since its theatrical run in 1986, but I remember enjoying it.

A Ghost Waits [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: I haven’t seen this micro-budgeted horror/comedy/romance. However, I have to respect anyone producing a film in Black & White in 2020.

F.T.A. [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This documentary records the traveling anti-war performance tour that Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, and others put on during the Vietnam War.

The Black Caldron [Blu-ray / Disney Movie Club Exclusive]: Disney’s first PG-rated animated film gets a Blu-ray release, but you can only purchase it if you are a member of the Disney Movie Club.
